Ah well with my early edition copy I'm about halfway through at page 183.

The narrator used the term "within an ace" a couple times. Not familiar with that and I looked it up. Ace here refers to the one pip side of a die, or I suppose the pip (dot) itself. Kind of an odd term to use for forest animals. Maybe within a whisker would be better but what do I know

The 100 year difference in meaning for "he prefers his meat well.hing" is hilarious. 😂

Ah, the narrator thinks the Goddess who watches over wild beasts made Challoner kill the momma bear and tie the animals together? Sounds much too "all things happen for a reason" for me...I feel like the man chose his actions and she would just be making the best of a bad situation. There are clearly other bears in the area that he could have taken for the meat, fat and fur he needed, what a ridiculous claim

Here in the stillness and gloom - there was life...beating and waiting in the ambush of those black pits...rousing itself ...with eyes glowing with a greenish fire 👀 muhnedoo is Manitou

The book has mentioned loup-garou a few times. I looked up to make sure. This folk monster , something like a werewolf is also in Mycroft Holmes that I read recently, as a monster in the Caribbean. I guess it's just French for werewolf..

And the girl porcupine was an attractive porcupine - a blonde! (It says blonde, jokingly, and also albino) with blue eyes (albinos have red eyes...) not the first weird 1919 white man thing in this book 🤦

I found out this was made into a silent film starting Lon Chaney! Film is available for free on wikipedia

I know he doesn't understand, but the baby knowing the scent of his mother's fur is gruesome :(
