No idea where I actually am because I'm reading this inside the Burden of Loyatly & Audible very rarely deigns to label anthologies, but I am struggling with this one. I'm thinking maybe I just don't get on with Sanders' writing so well, even beyond his unironic use & doubling down on the use of 'noble savage', because the premise is good, I'm just bored to tears. The prose & characters feel so flat & perfunctory.

Although not to the same high standards of other Sanders work, such as, the Serpent Beneath it however is still enjoyable in part. The concept of the story is an interesting and engaging one with a strong first half. Unfortunately, the second half of the book is mainly action scene after action scene which makes the end feel bogged down.

So far this is probably the one Horus Heresy novella I've found myself enjoying the least. All the interesting topics are skipped (The Carrion joining the Knights Errant, his escape from Mars etc), or immediately discarded (All cover characters beyond the RG are gone by chapter two...).
It doesn't work for me. The main plot idea feels stupid to me, and obviously won't work. Dorn seems like a buffoon too.

Having a bit of a hard time getting through the second chapter. Keep losing focus during the action. I like the setup of the different techmarine apprentices though. Might just be me being sick that distracts me from enjoying it more.
