Gabriel came to her room in the night and proposed. He will return the following night for her answer. That morning, she wakens only speaking Gaelic and can't meet her suitor's mother. Her father locks her up and is trying to see how to get her married before the madness is too severe like her mothers.

Catherine is dreaming of the curse and seeing Gabriel in her dreams. The she starts to hear the voices chanting the curse during the day. The story starts 5 days after her 18th birthday. When she sees him in the ballroom, she immediately assumes that it is a figment of her mind and tries to avoid him so she does not appear mad. After she is properly introduced, she is still pursuing the man she chose.

I like Catherine's thinking.
The strain of maintaining some semblance of normality was beginning to wear on her. How much more peaceful it would have been to stay at home with a book, rather than come here to be on display for the Polite World.
