I'm still blown away by "Love Poem w/Strat," still in awe of how sexual these poems are (Michael Waters calls them "vulgar, yet oddly welcoming in the 'biting joy' of their American riffs" and I think I agree), still agree with the earlier poems and the way that relationships with men can take so much out of women, but I wasn't blown away by every poem. Some, yes, god yes. Others felt numb and mute.

More sexual than I thought but also not. "Red sugar" reappears, again and again, like the molesting gynecologist, uniting these poems. I see, again, a lot of what it means to be a woman in these poems, what Jan Beatty has given up and into, what terrors men have given and forced upon her.
