“The shape of the Pentateuch, I posit, follows (and forms) its unifying theme: YHWH’s opening a way for humanity to dwell in the diving Presence. The essence of that way and the heart of the Pentateuch’s theology is the Day of Atonement.”

“Leviticus is often characterized thematically by holiness, but it is preferable to discern holiness not as an end in itself but rather as a means to an end, which is the real theme, the abundant life of joy with God in the house of God.”

Twenty pages in and I’m already stunned by this clear and beautiful and rich study of scripture. This is going to be one of my favorite books of the year.

The prologue talks about the story of the Bible being the unique God making a way for humanity to enjoy and live with Him. So far I’m this work to be both instructive and devotional with discussion of things like the menorah representing God’s light shining on the bread (representing Israel) in the tabernacle, texted by Aaron. God’s blessing mediated by His priest (Exodus 19 implications for all believers)
