This book is my all-time favorite read!! It has left me with a satisfied smile and memorable passages. The Way that Costain writes is most compatible with my way of reading....it fits comfortably. The many characters are interesting and pertinent to the plot from beginning to end. I won't soon forget this solidly epic historical fiction. Relatable to modern political standoffs and profound.

Just past half way and I am as smitten with the story as Frank Ellery is with Gabrielle. There is so much depth and dynamics in this story. The contrasts and the danger and the writer's skill make reading this feel as smooth as fine vintage wine and rich chocolate. I wish I could write like this. Family dynamics and elusive love and reality of war and political imbalances. Good book!

This historical fiction is my go-to comfort zone reading preference. I was hooked early with the French royal refugee Gabrielle finding her entourage's way through a London fog to safe shelter by holding Frances Ellery's coattails. Frances is a disabled patriotic news publisher whose family dynamics are intriguing. I feel as though I'm learning history in a luscious manner and yearn to know whether Frances succeeds.
