places in arcades and alleyways where she would look down at me with her
finger pressed to her lips. Still and close, we waited until the threat had
passed. All the rest was under the gauze of time.

Enjoying this so much so far! Discovered it through watching the archived Booker Prize ceremonies on YouTube. They read scene from this book that just felt so evocative. It wasn't an emotional scene ,she was describing her characters father's gambling addiction with this verisimilitude that made me finally understand why someone would be addicted to gambling even when they keep losing. Brilliant storytelling so far
