#Chateaubriand update - bio by J.C. Berchet is 50 pg. LONGER than War and Peace! Chateaubriand was ambassador to Sweden, Prussia and The Vatican...had difficulty keeping a job! Pushing thru the last chapters.."il va falloir que je persévère malgré tout!"

Done some skimming today...because I saw no need to follow Chateaubriand on a 'daily baisis' during his trip "l'Orient".
This is no ordinary biography!
50% biography - 25% travel journal (America, England, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Jerusalem, Egypt, Spain) 25% (subplots about writers and friends: Fontanes, Malesherbes, Mme de Stael and several mistresses The book could have been 500 pages shorter!"

Update: Decided to 'skim' 115 pages (231-347). We all know after Battle of Thionville (1792) C. was wounded, exiled to England, started writing his books and returned to France 06 May 1800.
Berchet goes 'way overboard' with the years C. was in England. Many of his friends (Fontanes)...are included in this secton and the death of C's mother and sister Julie. Time to move on to history and Napoleon!

Chateaubriand flees the turmoil of the French Revolution.
America: Chateaubriand traveled to the new world July - December 1791. He was bewitched (evoûté) by the landscape, people and especially the indians. Soon he would have to return to 'des orages de la Révolution'.

Chateaubriand was a tormented soul....even at the young age of 18.
Attempting suicide...his breakdown alarmed his family.
He entered the military, regained his balance and ....would
soon 'prendre la plume'.
Jean-Claude Berchet: (ch 3) ….goes off course sometime explaining Chateaubriand’s brother’s marriage contract!. If you read this book you get not only Francois René Chateaubriand…but the entire family and in-laws!
