This the third book in the story of the Sheridan family and follows the two children through their tragic lives after the war. A new character is introduced in this book; the love child of Chris Sheridan who had died earlier. When the child's mother is killed in a car accident, David brings her home and she becomes part of the family. Near the end of the story, the family becomes reconciled.
