Liberation is not only consistent with the gospel, it IS the gospel.

I have a lot of respect for Cone as he responds to his own limitations at the beginning of his theology in the preface. A theology of liberation cannot be a liberatory one without the voices of womanist, feminist, queer, and other marginalized voices. An exclusive focus on racial injustice without a comprehensive analysis of the intersections of the human condition is a faulty one.

The ferocity with which his voice is invoked in these writings conveys a sense of unwavering dedication and belief in the context that he is positioning himself in. As the reader who relates to the experience that Cone is writing about, I find myself in the same emotional state of frustration. I'm not here to make truth digestible to whiteness. Pop off, Cone.

The beginnings of the theology in which Cone was actualizing in the beginnings of his critique of Whiteness and its relation to Western Christianity in his cultural context as a Seminarian. Absolutely fell in love with his later book, The Cross and the Lynching Tree. Excited to dive back into his writings, and see how his theological approaches have shifted in comparison to TCATLT.
