Sometimes when I see his picture, I feel like flying out my front door and never looking back.

Like if she sits and stares for long enough, a job will magically appear.

When I get scared or the loneliness comes over me, I run my fingertip over the tiny scar and dream about the day the rest of my feathers will grow in.
That’s the day I’ll fly away from here.

I open my eyes and look up at Mom. She's watching me carefully. Her eyes are bright and clear just like they used to be before Daddy died. Nothing in there but the raw naked truth. "I'm sorry, Finch," she says, and I can tell by her voice that she is hurting, too. It's not a lot. But it's all I need to hear before I let her cover me with a hug.

If I had feathers I'd fly away - - fly until my arms give out. . . or until there's no sky left.

I remember the smooth feel of the wind rushing over my face and arms. I closed my eyes, and for a split second I was sure I had done it. I was flying. A second later the ground rose up to meet me with a powerful smash. The boys found me a few minutes later on the grass outside. --- Matt's pretty much his only friend these days. He's not going to give that up, even for the sake of his little sister's safety.

Daddy said once calling me Finch had nothing to do with flying. He said he named me Finch after a character in a famous book. I don't remember which book or which character he was talking about and it's too late to ask now. I guess it doesn't matter, because Mom took me aside afterward and told me that story's not true.

Ok, it got better quickly. Good book, quick read and the beginning was necessary for the ending. Review to come.

Shenanigans!!!! I DISBELIEVE a LOVING brother would let his AWFUL friend who is older than the sister do such HORRIBLE things to her! And WHY doesn't she FIGHT?!? Kick him where the sun don't shine, use the crutch to hit him over the head, SOMEthing! Don't act like a victim and you won't BE one! Oh I'm so mad!

Add a sadistic best friend of the older brother... Dad seems to have died from lung cancer. What does the mom do? Smokes and has her young daughter go to the corner store to buy her more when she's out. Nice! This book is rubbing me the wrong way.

I've never seen a parent go from married to widowed/ered, so have no basis for comparison, but why do all adults in these kids books absolutely lose the will to live when they lose their spouse? Aren't the kids a good reason to keep going and fight through the loss? The kids are hurting too! Be there for them!
