L'idée tenace que cet ouvrage serait un monument unique d'ouverture à l’hellénisme provient de l'usage détourné qui en a été fait par les humanistes florentins, lesquels se trouvaient en butte à l'hostilité des autorités religieuses. L'auteur de la première version latine du texte, Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444), comptait sur l'aura d'un père de l'église pour soutenir l'étude des "classiques" en milieu chrétien.
