Mosby disbands his rangers rather than have them surrender. He himself elects to surrender and a Union general is sent to negotiate terms. He is given pardon of those under his command but is allowed extra time to join in the defense of Richmond against Sherman. He finds out they fall on the way and is now wanted. Grant himself pardons him and they become great friends. “Hell is being a republican in Virginia.”

Mosby is almost mortality wounded when is house is raided by Union Calvary. He tricks the cavalrymen into thinking he’s an ordinary Lt with the VA infantry and stashes his Col uniform. After surgery his men move him around homes while recovering. His false mosbys continue to make raids capturing two more Union generals. The CC of Shenandoah gives up and the doc who said Mosby would die is court martialed.

Lt Col Mosby details a military train, but pulls all the civilians to safety, takes prisoner of all military on the train including German mercenaries on their way to the Shenandoah valley. On board were two Union paymasters and $173000 ( so basically a fuck ton of cash for 1864) he divides the money equally amongst his men with no regard to rank. He takes none of it.

Mosby now has over 200 men, has been promoted to Lt Col and is personally exempted from the ending of partisan rangers law due to his extremely capable tactics and protection of civilians. He is now so successful that every one of his companies commanders are dressed as and pretend to be Mosby so that the Union thinks he is every where at once. Talk about Psyops

Mosby and 125 rangers split the union lines, capture around 40 wagons, 30 mules and 30 prisoners causing Meade to abandon his flanking maneuver in Shenandoah and retreat north of the Rapidan. Lee personally congratulates Mosby and apologizes for assuming he was auctioning off war spoils rather than sell them to the CSA

Mosby losses a canon and decides they aren’t worth it. He doesn’t make the mistake of riding around the Union to Gettysburg and remains in Virginia. He is shot in the ribs and thigh but treated immediately and survives. He is so good at stealing wagons coming out of Alexandria that the city has a play- Mosby and the 500 wagons

He captured general stoughtan, commander of a Vermont infantry brigade, behind enemy lines in the middle of the night for army hq in Fairfax courthouse and returned undetected with fifty horses…Lincoln then wrote, I can replace a general, but fifty horses is a different story lol

Very informative! Mosby took a lot of his ideas on irregular warfare from Francis Marion and although an abolitionist he fought for Virginia serving under Stuart, Fitzurgh Lee and Jackson.
