This series (like many dystopian novels) has an overarching juxtaposition of utilitarianism and kantianism. I tend to side with the latter, and typically that is also the opinion of the antagonist. Interestingly, Thomas and Teresa are initially in agreement with the “ends justify the means” and “sacrificing one for the many.” Thomas seems to completely change his mind when his memoirs are swiped.
