Generally I am enjoying this one. I like Lynn Kelling's character-driven story-telling. I sort of wish there was, well, a little bit more going on? It's a lot of not-much followed by a BDSM scene, with the pattern on repeat. I don't need contrived drama or anything, I just wish they'd leave the house!

Both of these characters seem much older than they are 🤔

Also, I realized I was forcing myself to read simply because I splurged and paid the outrageous price of ten bucks for this book. I suddenly asked myself, "Why am I doing this? I wouldn't keep eating a meal I bought if it sucked. Unless I was starving. And I'm not starving for lack of books--thank god." So, end.

Ho boy, we've gone way past embrace-the-awful and have arrived at eye-rolls and skimming. I wish this was better because I love h/c. What finally killed it was the way Shea was so eager, so pleased with the sex and "love" after such severe trauma (twice!) and what should have been long-term trust issues evaporated in the hotness of David (who started to read like a real asshole).

Oh god, this is AWFUL. Awfully good in an awful way. Yanno when a book goes beyond awful into EMBRACE THE AWFUL? Yeah, that. The dialogue is hooky; the newly met, and dramatically, suddenly, DEEPLY connected characters are a breath away from "I love yous." Pauper and prince theme, father-villain theme, it all swarms around like fire ants on a smashed watermelon of juicy prose. God, this is awful.

Lol, omg, David, you sound like an utter ASS when you refer to yourself as a talented Dom: "He’d show Shea exactly what it meant to be with a careful, talented Dominant, testing his instincts, giving him overwhelming pleasure rather than pain, tasting, and teasing to hear how he would beg for more."

I like how kelling has given me the complexities of a person already: David may be a sadist and a dominant, but this also means he's a protector, a caretaker. He's outraged at Whitt's treatment. The book had a "not sure if want" start: random sex scene, no emotional connection, and lots of telling, but it's picking up fast and solid.

Oh that hurt/comfort. Gets me in the gut. Pathos, man.

I'm in a forgiving mood. My initial review was pretty harsh. I'm willing to give it a second try. Hell isn't freezing over, that'll be when I finish Fifty Shades. ;)
