Requisite ‘hero gets raped’ scene that’s in every Companion book. But this one isn’t by supernatural means & that makes it feel like purposeless shock value which isn’t even shocking (because this is book 7). We all knew it was gonna happen, because Caligula + Companion novel.

Another bathhouse scene. 🫧 I’ve liked most of this series, but the previous one was boring & this one…eh. It has some interesting parts (Vampire Livia participating in the plot to overthrow Caligula), but the vampirism is so minimal & incidental that it feels like Squires had gotten tired of writing Companion books & was just going through the motions.

Not much vampire action in this one, but we’ve visited the villa’s bathhouse 3 times now. Everyone is very clean. 🫧

‘A feeling of pressure built inside her. She was too full, as though she were a ripe pomegranate ready to burst in the sun & spill red juices that soaked into the earth.’

“The slave we bought didn’t last, & we have need of new fodder for our…attentions.” They only glanced to his owner. Their eyes drifted back to his naked body. “You have saved us the trouble of the market. This one suits our needs.”
….The predatory, sadistic Roman empire is well-suited to Squires’ predatory, sadistic villainesses. 😂

My final Companion novel—the 7th, counting the prequel. *checks box on Finish This Series list* This one includes time travel, which isn’t my thing, but in this case I’ll make an exception to see Squires’ take on Ancient Rome + vampirism.

Another good book in this series. H/h were well-matched, and I enjoyed both the time travel aspect and the ancient Rome setting. Review coming soon.

Okay so far I don't get how you can change the future if you don't remember it. And the explanation better not be quantum anything because that's a cop out.
