how can I not read anything I know is so highly recommended…

I’ve finished If This is a Man. It’s an amazing book of course, but also not as harrowing as you might expect. I think other books like Maus also cover this, but there are many descriptions of the tiny differences in peoples resources and little moments of chance that often lead to death or survival. As with Austerlitz or Zone of Interest, the Nazi regime’s commitment to rules and documentation is shocking.
