Status Updates From GB84

This novel seethes with fury, hate, and fear. Very few writers have captured voices as desperate as Peace does with the miners Martin and Pete here. The operators behind the scenes but in front of the cameras exude varying levels of fear, corruption, and venality. The leviathan of a state wrapping iron fingers around workers and squeezing is horrifying and compelling.

This is still my pick for the strongest British novel of the century, narrowly outpacing Wolf Hall. It’s a dense and ultimately heartbreaking book. The chapter openers from Martin and Peter perfectly balance the deeper machinations of the narrators. It’s a horrifying and effective story of the industrial and economic darkness at the heart of wealth. The gradual revelation of betrayals turns the screw each week.
