Good
Little read but the authors, one liners inserting, modern day norms into historical periods of the past can be distracting.

His conclusion on Jesus and beards is a bit of a stretch. Particularly in light to the connotation of beards as a mark of a sage conveying an emotion of wisdom seen throughout wisdom literature.

In his chapter starting on Jesus Christ. He just seems to look over the fact that artistic expressions could seek to convey Christ in relationship to old testament figures. He already spoke about king David in earlier part of the book. I don’t get how he can miss this connection. It seems the author wanted to focus on connecting Christ with Roman figures.

It seems that he’s hitting certain key historical periods and just giving insights on how the beard was understood at the time. So the text works as a good repository of sources. However, sometimes language of the current cultural moment creeps in, and the historian seeks to apply it to a time that these terms didn’t exist.
