I love reading Willa Cather but I’m finding this small book hard.I am well over the age of 40 but I’m still finding it difficult reading. The very first essay was filled with so many quotes in French with no translation that I feel I missed what it was trying to say. I felt like a country bumpkin At a Boston Brahman’s literary salon.
If I was editing the reprint of this book, I would add copious footnotes.

From Cather's essay, The Novel Demeuble, on the craft of writing a novel. "A book like The Rainbow by D.H. Lawrence sharply reminds one how a vast distance lies between emotion and mere sensory reactions....Can one imagine anything more terrible than the story of Romeo and Juliet rewritten in prose by D.H. Lawrence".
