I was curious why my Scotch kinfolk left Scotland and migrated to North America. Well, the second chapter of Leyburn's book paints such a bleak picture of Scotland in the 17th century, I no longer wonder why Scots left their homeland. I now wonder why anyone remained behind in Scotland. Leyburn paints a picture where the Scotch saught every "opportunity ... to escape a drab and dreary life" (see p. 35).
