Unrelated to the mystery, why did the cottage renters' other reconnaissance watcher have sex with Benny? Was it just a feisty, grown-up moment in this book? A fun detail I have observed, if this pattern continues throughout Howard's series: he appears to ensure Benny gets laid in at least every second novel!

The camera culprit appears guilty only of not wanting his photo with a lady. An interesting turn came of mining rumours. What would probably hit the fan is whatever was behind that cult ceremony painting. What was going on at that mill and is there still evidence? If it connected with the evangelist, the preacher's career would be toast.

We're rolling now into circumstances too numerous and a ways back in history for anyone to guess. All the characters are interested and utterly well-varied. I do know falling into the lake with the kid's camera was a ploy to get rid of the group picture he shot. So that guy, Del, is guilty of something.

It's taking time to peak my interest, except the pleasure and originality in spending time with Benny's character. A mystery is afoot by now and not solely a surveillance objective. One great scene is the manner in which Benny innocently, impartially, yet accurately parries blunt proselytizing of religion. Never speak to a decent person as if they were "on a doomed path" because it doesn't happen to be your path!

It's always a pleasure to rejoin Mr. Engel and his creations. In this one, Benny travels from his Niagara Falls-proximity town. It'll be fun to see him in a nature setting. I'm curious to see how enthralling this specific book will be because it's Mr. Engel's second one to have a film made of it!
