For the first time in a long time, I felt like I had it all. I had a loving, supportive family, a son who had now become my best friend, and a woman I loved and adored. I felt like I could finally breathe and let go of all the hate I’d felt for years.

“We all know that kiss was one-sided,” Amber said, and I closed my eyes tightly, taking a moment to fight back the tears. “Yeah, I know.” I knew Noah didn’t intentionally go to Stacey so she could kiss him. However, he did push me aside to rush to her aid. That’s what had upset me. There was bar full of people, bouncers included, yet he had to be her hero.

My gaze met hers, and her smile pulled at something deep inside me. I knew I wanted nothing more than to spend day after day being surrounded by her love. “I love you,” I whispered. Her eyes filled with tears, and her lower lip trembled. “I’m so in love with you, sweetheart.”

“If you keep poking me with those damn needles, I swear to you, woman, I am gonna kick you.” I looked up from kneeling before Bailey and laughed. “I thought you loved being poked,” I replied with a smirk, and she narrowed her eyes. “Smarta$$,” she huffed.

My first night at my place with my son was amazing. Having him here made it all seem even more real. I still found it hard at times to believe I’m a father. But in such a short time, I found a love I never knew existed. The love for a child is all-consuming, yet impossible to explain.

I felt like someone had punched me in the stomach as I watched Stacey laughing as she looked at Noah, who held Austin on his knee. Noah’s back was to me, but there was no mistaking him. He still wore his officer uniform, and his body dwarfed the small chair he sat in.

“Are you my dad?” Without even thinking, I wrapped my arms around him and pulled his little body against my chest. “Yes,” I whispered into his neck. My body shook with emotions I never felt before. “I’m your daddy, bud.” The tears rolled along my cheeks as he placed his arms around my neck and hugged me back.

“What do you say I take you to see some horses tomorrow?” I asked, completely ignoring Stacey’s reaction. I no longer gave a sh!t what she had to say. I had a lot of time to make up for, and I didn’t feel I needed her permission for that. “Do you have a horse?” Austin asked, looking at me hopefully. “I sure do, bud. A whole ranch full.” I smiled at him before standing and leaning over to kiss the top of his head.

Disgust and rage slowly burned along my spine, combined with an unexpected sense of love for the child in front of me. How could anyone keep a child hidden from their father? How could she take from me the things she had and still face me as if she hadn’t robbed me blind? The boy’s eyes were a replica of my own. He was a miniature version of myself.

“Cut the tears, Stacey. You wanted this, you got it. Now get out. I’m not holding you back from your perfect life any longer.” I waited until the door slammed before I caved and sat on the end of the bed. My clothes from last night were still tossed around the room. I had given her years of my life, thinking we had a future.
