I'm having a really difficult time slogging through this last bit. This book is just way too meandering and long-winded. It reads like an open-world video game, complete with pointless side quests rather than a developed linear plot.

How many times can one narrator be knocked unconscious and/or drugged? Good lord, Morovania must end up with traumatic brain injury by the end of this book.

So far, one of the best historical thrillers I've ever read, but with the added bonus of murderous werewolf cabals! Not sure how the relentless pace can keep up, but it's been non-stop awesome to this point.
Why is this so obscure? It needs to be reprinted by Valancourt or Centipede, so a new generation of horror fans can discover it. Of course, I'm not even halfway through yet, so I may have spoken too soon.

This is actually very well-written and riveting so far. I took a chance on this without knowing anything about it (unfortunately I don't have a smartphone so I have to just go for it sometimes). My edition says 1977, not 1981, which gave me a hint that this would at least be well-written. There may not have been as many great horror novels in the 70s compared to the 80s, but the percentage of good/bad was way higher.
