I haven't thought about how war affected musicians in the 20th century. When talking about challenges during that period, John Edward Hasse mentions that "as the war raged on, it affected [musicians] both positively and negatively. By 1944, many of the biggest stars in [the world of music] would join the army and go off to war" (Hasse 367). It is interesting how they had different challenges that we don't have today.

When the author mentioned that "the [Duke Ellington's jazz] orchestra had enjoyed one of its periods of greatest stability; except for a brief absence or two, no one had left the orchestra since [the lead trumpet player] in 1929" I feel like the author is foreshadowing another person to be fired or to leave (Hasse 184).
