It’s possibly just the dearth of info that has survived . . . but I find myself deeply lamenting the loss of Numenius’ writings. Particularly those writings dealing with the nature and fate of the soul.

Philo of Alexandria and Plutarch are now behind us . . . now we’re moving into uncharted territory

This book is really a phenomenal study. The authors command of his subject is broad and penetrating and the history of thought that he’s exploring is the fulcrum on which the ancient world spilled over into the new! Really can not recommend this one enough.

Such a seminal study. This is my second read through, and with a broader understanding of the whole Platonic worldview now under my belt, what was once mysterious and cryptic in this work, is now illuminating a whole world of interrelated studies.

I picked this book up because I was interested in Philo of Alexandria. Dillon knows his subject well, and the development of Middle Platonism as a whole, particularly with its broad influence of Pythagoreanism and the marriage of Platonic and Peripatetic philosophy has helped expand my interest in the development of classical thought in some really interesting ways.
