The first chapter goes into detail about how Hegemony has been used into the built of the women's magazines, and how through these magazines we may have wittingly or unwittingly colluded in our own subjugation and oppression. The chapter also focuses on the ideology in order to understand how and why this oppression of Filipino Women has lasted so long from the Spanish Colonial Period to Modern Day Philippines.
