“I tried to talk to him, but he wouldn’t listen to me, so I watched him, hoping to be there when Shakush struck. I tried to give him a weapon that would offer at least some slight advantage. I missed the attack.”
He had dragged this weight forward for decades alone. It was a miracle it hadn’t broken him.

“I haven’t seen him.” My father shrugged. “He is taking a sort of a sabbatical. A journey to find himself.”
“Was that his idea or yours?” Curran asked.
“A bit of both.”

I leaned back. “Why does it matter to you?”
“Consider me old-fashioned,” he said. “People talk. People ask when or if there will be a formal union.”
“Who are these people?”
“D’Ambray,” Curran said.

“Blossom, I purchased the land. You can’t really prevent me from building anything I want on it. But if it causes you distress, I will be willing to stipulate it won’t be more than two floors in height.”
Yes, and each floor would be a hundred feet in height. “No more than fifty-five feet in height for the entire building.”
Roland smiled. “Very well.”

“I don’t want you to visit me.”
“Parents don’t always do what their children want them to do,” Roland said. “Sometimes they show up unannounced and nag you about your eating habits. And I am about to do just that. Have the two of you set a date for your wedding?”

“How have you been?” my father asked.

and sitting on his hands for two days waiting to see if I’d die while the kids were freaking out had driven him nuts. He was wound so tight, the energy rolled off him.

“Even Daniels?” another merc asked.
That got some giggles. Curran cracked a smile. It was a bright, infectious smile. “Especially Daniels. I work to keep her daily. Otherwise she wouldn’t put up with me.”

“You should do the dramatic door-opening thing,” I told Curran.
“Would you like to see me do the dramatic door-opening thing?”
“Yes, I would. Very much.”
A quick smile bent his lips

“I don’t know who you are,” I told him. “But don’t touch my kid.”
“Surprise slapped his face. He let go and Julie hugged me. I hugged her back.”
“Derek and Julie fell in behind us. Ascanio chased me. “Kate! It’s me.”
“‘Me’ is a terrible name,” I told him. “You should aim for at least three letters.”

“Are you back or are you not?” he asked quietly.
“Somewhat.”
“Kate.”
The way he said my name made me want to reach out and touch him.
“I need to know where we are.” His gray eyes had grown dark, not angry but resigned. “Are we okay? Are we complete strangers, are we on a first date, or are we going home together tonight?”

“Curran rose and held up his hand. “Kick my hand.”

My falling turned out to be uncontrolled. I landed on my ass.

“I got up to my feet. My body felt like a numb limb coming back to life.
I snapped a crescent kick. I’d whipped it with my hip and it was so fast, it blurred. My foot slapped his hand. He took a step back. His eyes narrowed.
“Tap,” I told him.

the city I’d claimed surrendering what little residual magic it had kept during the technology. The land I’d claimed was trying to keep me alive.
It wasn’t enough to lift me up. It was barely there, but it stretched to me. I felt the city breathing.
