Love when every character in a book is so repressed and at the end of their rope that you know it’s going to end with something insane and Flannery O’Conner-core like murder or self-castration.🤩 This is so so good

When I first read this book in 1984, I was enchanted. Stafford’s writing was a feast of imagery and languid summer moods, sights and sounds. The ending was devastating.

Making a point of reading something by each one of Robert Lowell’s ex-wives. Hardwick has been my fave but this is solid so far
