Apparently this book is old enough that sentences like "Annette told us in the hallway how unhappy you was about signor Montoni..." are grammatically correct. I've noticed that odd use of "was" instead of "were" several times from different characters. And its not a dialect thing.

I've decided Annette is actually the hero of this novel. She has all the humor and charisma that Emily lacks.

we finally came to udolpho let’s goooo

34% in and we're FINALLY at the titular castle of Udolpho. I need some Gothic things to happen to this rather boring protagonist post haste.
