Studies show that accountability—knowing that you will have to justify your judgment to an audience—improves reasoning only when three conditions are met:
1. Decision-makers know before making a choice that they will be accountable.
2. The audience's views are unknown.
3. Decision-makers believe the audience is well-informed and interested in accuracy.

In small-scale ancestral hunter-gatherer groups, reputation was everything. A ruined reputation meant ostracism or death, while a stellar reputation meant access to resources, mates, and alliances.

When presented with moral dilemmas or "harmless taboo" scenarios (like eating a dead pet or lying on a resume), individuals who felt physically clean judged others' moral failings significantly more harshly than those in a neutral or untidy environment.
