True, Anna was a big woman, round and healthy and plain as rye bread. But her heart was the most generous of any of her sisters, and she was as good a cook, mother and homemaker as their mother.

She looked away, her cheeks warm, but she didn't protest when Thomas took her hand and kissed the back of it. "I'll take care of you, you know," he said quietly. He raised her hand to his face and pressed it against his chin.

Wow, everyone in this novel is controlling, judgmental, nosy, busybody trash.

Some Amish men were uncomfortable with women's work, but not Thomas. She liked that about him; he reminded her of her father, who had not been above grabbing a dishcloth and helping wash dishes after supper.

"I'm not giving up on the pretty little schoolteacher," Jakob replied, still watching Ellie retreat. "She had me from the first time I laid eyes on her. She's going to be my wife. She just doesn't know it yet."
Gross. Stop being disgusting, Gaston.

Neither of them spoke, but after a while he took her hand in his. He knew he was taking a chance, but he couldn't help himself.
He saw her cheeks color, but she didn't try to free her hand.

"No, I just want a peaceful life, a new baby to hold in my arms, someone to walk to worship with, a husband who will take care of us and make the decisions."

What would Leah do, he wondered, if he tried to kiss her? He'd kissed Violet and Mary and Jane, to name a few girls. It had been fun and he'd liked it very much. But, suddenly, he wanted to take Leah into his arms and not just kiss her, but hold her. And he got the feeling she felt the same way.

"If we get in trouble for this, it's your fault," she declared, but she didn't care if it wasn't considered seemly for a woman to be riding a horse.

This is the 'pretty racy' date she and Thomas went on: traveled to an organic farm. Ate fast food in a parking lot. Went bowling.

As much as he enjoyed being with Leah - and she was always fun - she had a way of making him uneasy. She was so outspoken... so experienced. Not like other Amish girls he knew. He wondered if she'd ever be able to return to the quiet life in Seven Poplars or any other Old Order community after her life in the English world. Pity the man who did marry her. It wasn't natural, a woman knowing more than her husband.

He took her arm, guided her off into the grass as a truck passed and then released her.
Leah felt a warm rush of pleasure. How long had it been since she'd felt a man's touch? It felt good, and the realization made her wonder how she could so quickly forget that she had once been a married woman. And now was Daniel's widow.

Thomas seemed FAST, almost reckless at times, but he wasn't outright rebellious.
This is her idea of fast. o.O

Yeah, but that's not what she wants, is it?

Thomas was a good guy, though not the sort of man she'd be interested in. Thomas was far too immature and happy-go-lucky to suit her. And too self-centered.

"Offer me no lighthearted, carefree noodleheads. I'm seeking a sober and steady husband, one with gray in his hair, who knows what it is to suffer loss. Can you find me such a man?"
