Despite it's near-universally good reputation, the truth was usually complicated. Not everyone could handle it, and there were plenty of "truths" I'd rather didn't get out. Many said then wanted the truth, but once in possession of it, it became a different story. These idiots who went about touting such idioms as "the truth shall set you free" were, like most people who claimed superior knowledge, ignorant.
