I had completely forgotten, or possibly never even known, just how much of the tension leading up the American Civil War was due to the slave states fearing, not that slavery would be abolished in existing states, but that it wouldn't be allowed in new ones, or that new states would vote on whether they wanted it, or even that the new states wouldn't be pro-slavery ENOUGH. Bonkers shit.
