“The old voice of the ocean, the bird-chatter of little rivers. Or like some girl’s breathing, who dances alone, By the ocean-shore, dreaming of lovers.”

“Why listen, even the water is sobbing for something. The west wind is dead, the waves Forget to hate the cliff, in the upland canyons. Now tall and slender suddenly, The stalks of purple iris blaze by the brooks. This deerweed shivers with gold, the white globe-tulips
Blow out their silky bubbles
Shells pair on the rock, birds mate,
The moths fly double
It is time for us now
To make that burning flower.”

“The storm-dance of gulls, the barking game of seals, Over and under the ocean . . . Divinely superfluous beauty. And hills tower, waves fall. The incredible beauty of joy. Burns and thirsts for love. . .
More than my blood for you, by the shore of seals while the
wings
Weave like a web in the air
Divinely superfluous beauty.”
