fundamentally the focus of studying psychological disorders are the clinical description, causation (etiology), and treatment and outcome
presenting problem (reason why person came to clinic) is the first step to clinical description. also it is relevant to know the prevalence (# of ppl in a population w the disorder, incidence (# of cases in a period), sex ratio, typical age of onset

on atypicality - the more substantial the deviation, the more abnormal it is, yet not necessarily disordered, eccentric would be more fitting
an abnormal behavior is hard to define from a culturally diverse viewpoint, thus dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context &
associated with present distress & impairment in functioning is the widely accepted definition, and 'prototypes' is the best we can use

everyone experiences a bit of dysfunction, but to ultimately qualify to a psychological disorder, an individual has to be experiencing three things: psychological disfunction (a breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning), distress or impairment (when an individual is extremely upset and cannot function properly), and atypical response (culturally unexpected)
