The reader has to piece together the progression of the story through the inner dialogue of the people living in it. A lot of the pivotal plot points (e.g marriage) don't even get covered, the reader learns about their happening through the memories and thoughts of characters. Lispector's book revolves around the invisible, the inner worlds of characters that never bubble up to the surface of the material world.
