we may grant that a program running in a computer can reason, can perform elaborate mathematical computations, can play chess better than a human champion, can beat humans in TV shows, can translate speech, and can even drive vehicles, but we would still be hard pressed to believe that a program with those abilities has free will, is selfconscious, that it has the concept of self, and that it fears its own death.
