Is this a deeply unpleasant book? Yes. A thousand times yes. Most of Malzberg's work makes my skin crawl, and this is no exception.

I just read what must be one of the earliest examples of graphic gay sex/rape* in a science fiction novel. *The narrator is at best, extraordinarily unreliable. In other words, he's a typical Malzberg protagonist.

Ahh, that's better. ISBN, publication date, and page count have all been corrected. (The book continues to be, unsurprisingly, rather uncomfortable.)
