insect control missed 2 things: 1.) amount of food
available, conditions of weather and climate, the presence of competing or predatory species,
all are critically important.

2.) fecundity under survival/existential threat condistions

Ah, so the robin (and other birds) die-off resulting in the lack of song-birds which usually heralded the end of winter is what gives this book the title... Excellent, poignant, and moving idea.

All started around the WWII research... This is hair-raising...
