The writing is oddly stilted... The author is trying way too hard to bring us back to the 19th century. Louise is entirely lacking in character so far.
I am annoyed by the amount of info dumping so far. Do we really need to know how many English immigrants were living in France during that time?
The answer: No. Just tell the damn story without info dumping.

Alright. Time to start reading this. I didn't make it very far before I got put off by the writing and had to set it aside for awhile.
I got my handy dandy notebook and will be making notes throughout my reading experience.

“Louise was wandering around in front of the books, reading the titles and looking at the beautiful leather covers. . . . Yet the pleasure she felt at escaping from her life by reading was something that from then on she could never do without.”

You know that moment when you lose a book and have no idea where it is? Well, I had that moment when I moved and couldn't find a box of books. However, not to worry. I found the book in the box in the back of my closet.
Going to read this from the beginning. :)

I am only a few pages into the book, but can I just say that I love Louise's character so far. She seems like a charming young lady.
