The conflict between artificial, drug-induced rhythm and natural bodily rhythm in Requiem for a Dream has its counterpart in the way in which the affective development of the film progresses from a euphoric phase of drug addiction to dysphoric devastation. The coexistence of euphoria and dysphoria is represented, for instance by the continuous use of the split screen in the film.
