Maybe I’m too stupid to interpret this properly but I can’t get over the fact Virgil is a real poet. I literally laughed out loud when I realised fake-Virgil had to remain Pagan. It really feels like Dante working through a crisis of faith in accepting that his literary hero isn’t Catholic. Idk what the modern equivalent is but it just feels like lads on (religious) tour so far

Sparknotes is coming in clutch for this one. I don’t know half the people Dante is running into.

Introduction was long but needed to understand most of how Dante writes. Will need to read his other books as well, like vita nuova and the purgatorio, and paradisio.

Dante is such a hater for the 16th century it’s making me cackle so hard!
