The heartbreaking part was in Debbie’s goodbye. Something so tragic about her time running out and leaving this newfound family of hers. And Ella mourning the lost years with the son she thought was dead.

There’s also an air of quiet resignation that’s drifted down which is done well.

Actually devastating—I shed tears when Debbie gave her mother the gold star at her funeral.

But yeah, big reveals and what happened to Ella’s daughter and that it was because of what was between her husband and sister. Really makes you feel the ache for everyone. For Roberta, that the sisters don’t talk anymore on Ella’s orders.

And Debbie has cancer and is dying? Why must it all be so tragic?

It’s quite nice so far—I particularly enjoyed how the characters are dealing with their own flavors of grief. Debbie’s childhood backstory really makes the heart ache with her father trying to protect her hope and her just wanting her mother’s love.

The secrets part of the book is also interesting since it seems to have torn a chasmic rift between Ella and Roberta. Wonder what that’s about?
