I'm trying to finish this book I really am but Good God... It's like someone made the asshole bully character the MC and forgot to add anything compelling or complex so that the reader can root for him

Roland is just constantly commenting on how much stronger and better he is than everyone and it is just grating. He is played as if he is supposed to be charming but I HAAAATTTEEEE HIIIIMMMM

I'm going to take a break from this series I spent a Hoopla credit on this so I may finish it just because I have no more options at the end of the month.
I just really don't like any of the characters
AND THE BROMANCE IS TRASH! Imagine your 'best friend' disappearing late at night, not seeing any sign of him for days and JUST NOT CARING! AT ALL! But even disregarding that their 'friendship' isn't healthy

Oof. She interrupted while her seniors is speaking and when she get 'admonished' for it (which is only him calling her apprentice) she goes all "How dare he be billeting and arrogant to me! I'll take that from my mentor but not from him. I won't take much more" Yikes

The worst part is that I think Shelton feels like this is actually a strong independent female character but being an asshole does not equal strength

Oh boy. Shelton really just wrote in a female character just to be a love interest. That's a big Yikes from me especially since Shelton seems to fail at doing romance so far.

I hope Shelton is better at constructing a good plot because so far I actively dislike 2 out of the 5 young characters, 1 is just an insert love interest, 1 bland nerd caricature, and the last 1 I don't have enough info to feel anything towards
