now WHO is qifrey talking to here?? obviously someone relatively high up in the ranks if they had the authority to approve coco's apprenticeship. i wonder if this person is the source of the gossip? i assume qifrey told as few people as possible so who else would've had the info to be able to spread it? does he actually trust this person or is he doing what he has to in order to achieve his own goals?

again, it's insanely telling that of all the forbidden magic exceptions for witches to make, they didn't choose healing. they chose memory manipulation. BOTH OF WHICH CAN BE VERY EASILY EXPLOITED FOR SELFISH PURPOSES but i'd argue that healing people is probably the nobler risk to take??? god i feel like there's levels of corruption going on here that i can't even fathom yet

i LOVE that coco's immediate reaction to hearing about the existence of forbidden spells is to want to learn everything she can about them. knowledge is POWER, knowledge is how we avoid repeating history, knowledge is how we grow and learn from mistakes, even if it hurts to learn, ESPECIALLY if it hurts to learn. it's the antithesis of the hypocritical gatekeeping of witch society

uh huh so instead of doing the work to formulate and organize laws to help regulate magic use, the "good" witches decided to forcibly remove the knowledge of all magic from everyone except those THEY deemed worthy. and i assume those people were family, so it's just been one big web of nepotism since then. i do wonder if we'll get more specifics about who was chosen to carry the secret back then

it hasn't even been 12 hours how the FUCK are there already rumors about coco?? i assume that that's something that will be explained eventually bc it keeps coming up (or at least it does in the anime). there's gotta be witches in charge of keeping eyes and ears on everyone right?? it seems like that kind of society tbh i just wonder what form these spies/cops/informants take

if you can control the dissemination of information, you can control entire factions of people and their beliefs about the world and OTHER factions of people. it's the same fascist bullshit that fuels book bans!!!
anyway. can you tell i'm fascinated by this story and its use of magic as an allegory for very pressing real-world issues
i'm absolutely buzzing thinking about how this theme will continue to expand

"there's magic (art) all over the world. why would the part when it gets cast (creation) be such a big secret?" the gatekeeping of knowledge and creative processes really does stifle so much MORE art from being created and for what????? discussing art is one of the most beautiful and fulfilling things that we as humans have evolved to do, so why would anyone ever want to suffocate of that instinct?????? but i'm also wondering if there's any physical reason for the hidden eye. as far as i've seen into the anime, he also always wears a black undershirt with long sleeves and a high neck, so is that a conscious decision to hide something PHYSICAL or is it solely a metaphorical thing? maybe both? i like both i'm choosing both for now. i know he has trauma what IS IT

i want to note it at some point and i guess this page is as good a place as any, but i'm VERY intrigued by the character design of qifrey, specifically his hair and single black lens covering his right eye. right off the bat, i'm thinking that this is hinting at some form of moral grey-ness (especially bc i do know just a bit of what's to come and i've seen him be shockingly threatening) (cont.)
