End of ch5. Catastrophic sci fi bc Europe has to find a way to show the atrocities it committed on colonial peoples visited on itself. Chesney's "Battle of Dorking" starts future war in 1871.

Nightmare of invasion<->fantasy of conquest. Llewellyn's "the Strange Invaders"'s lizard ppl, prob rep modernism. Assimilation 1938+ (Cambpell's "Who Goes There"). "Vintage Season" future tourists gawp at a plague (Star Trek).

End of Ch4, on cyborgs as an expression of racism and classism.

Frankenstein and Dr. Moreau as creating tabula rasa beings (aka differences are societal, not racial). Darwin: natural selection is paused for members of a civilized society.

War of the Worlds as an early use of prosthetics (cyborgs). Giant brains from Stapledon, somehow linked with Marx's "fetishism of commodities." Anatomy as destiny (more racism).

End of ch3, about how to interpret. Both the older scifi changing perspective, and modern readers finding irony in them.

Continual focus on Well's The Time Machine. Also an interpretation of London's the Red One as intensely ironic, which even Rieder's sources disagree about.

I think this is more accurate pagecount (Hoopla sucks). End of ch 2.

Early scifi is a product of the neomedieval definition of the romantic revival, less than the 18th century version.

Lostrace scifi very similar to adventure novels - white guy has all the answers and the aliens are too stupid to realize what wealth they possess - extremely Western judgment of values.
