The small-town boy had enlisted in the USAF. Partly to prove he could be more than what she'd thought of him. And partly to get away from the memories that plagued him in Taylor Hills. He'd been heartbroken. Still hadn't understood what was it about him that wasn't good enough for her. She'd walked out on him.

Kelsey knows how to beat a dead horse. Her "feet itch to run" every few pages and she constantly whines her dead mama "didn't believe I could make it to the Olympics".... Wish she would suck it up, build a bridge and get over it!!

"You have fun necking with Matt out in the drive?" Kelsey's face flushed. "We weren't necking." "Sure looked like something was going on. Are you sure you know what you're doing with Matt? When he finds out how you walked out on him..." "I know." He was going to hate her. "You're going to get your heart broken," Katie said.

Staying shouldn’t have even been on Kelsey's radar. But being with Matt was making her wonder what if…? And that had scared her. Scared her good, so she’d lashed out at her sister, laughing off the idea in a cruel way that Katie hadn’t deserved. She didn't particularly want to coach, but she couldn't stay here. Matt still hadn't realized the truth of their breakup, and she wouldn't be able to face him when he knew.

The fact that he’d slept while she drove—instead of scanning the area around them for traffic or other dangers—showed how very vulnerable this injured Matt was. Seeing him again had brought back everything. How much she'd loved him. The pain she'd felt when she'd walked away. The lonely, late nights when she'd stared at the ceiling, wondering if she'd made the right choice.

His heart pounded, and he felt heat flush up his neck and into his face as he stared at her. Memories slid into place. His Kelsey. Finally, one thing in his life made sense. He strode toward her and, although she’d frozen in place, he had some sense that she was glad to see him. He reached for her, pulled her into his arms. "Kelsey." Her name was barely a breath. And then he kissed her.
