As I read Book I — I wondered why Milton refers to earthly and classical places before Satan has yet to discover Earth. It seems that these descriptions of Hell are from the super omniscient narrator, not from any of the fallen angels, and they allow Milton to help his readers grasp the timeless, cosmic narrative by comparisons to the familiar historical world his readers would know.
