The book has found it’s rhythm now - the combination of the space race with the march of civil rights. Examining how the US scolded itself for potentially hamstringing its own scientific progress by denying black children the same schooling opportunities as white children. Maybe the push for Civil Rights that came from the White House wasn’t a moral quest - it was politically expedient.

I think, if I hadn’t watched the movie, I would be struggling to continue. The subject matter of segregation and the experiences of a black woman are a worthy read, but it is quite a dry prose, that aims to give a history of USA avian innovation as well as the women’s stories. I understand that they are intertwined, but I’m not as gripped as I thought I would be
